Topic:
Preservation of a dying language - Kadazandusun language
Background:
The Kadazandusun language is a
native language to one of the three territories on the island of Borneo –
Sabah. Its origin comes from the people whose races are Kadazan and Dusun. It
is the mother toungue of the Kadazandusun people. The Kadazandusun group of
people make up the largest indigenous group of race in Sabah besides the
Bajaus, the Muruts, etc. The language speakers are mainly found along West
Coast of Sabah and in some interior places such as Tambunan, Telupid, Ranau and
along the Kinabatangan river. Also, in most wet markets, that’s where the
language are also spoken to communicate amongst themselves – the consumers and the
sellers. Although the language is widely known by the older generation of the Kadazandusun
community, different areas of Sabah have different dialects of the language and
it may be difficult for the one end of the chain to communicate to the other.
- To preserve the Kadazandusun language
- To expose the language to people who never heard of it.
- To make people appreciate the importance of not forgetting their roots or mother tongue
Issue:
In this modern day, the language is slowly forgotten especially
by the younger generations. In Malaysia, the official international language is
English and its national language is Bahasa Melayu which has been since 1963. There
are negligent attitudes or the ‘tidak apa’ attitude towards the cultural and
traditional heritage conservation among the Kadazandusun communities.
